Welcome to My Blog! "Mouth breathing while sleeping"





MY STORY 2: I thought having "dry mouth" was the only negative effect I would have from MOUTH BREATHING...

I was completely wrong!!


I thought that it was normal for people to mouth breath while sleeping. Most nights, I would wake up with my mouth having the "normal" amount of moisture (my inner mouth and tongue would be "damp" from my own saliva. However, there would be some nights where I would wake up and my mouth would be so dry (void of any moisture) that it would ache.



Picture a vast desert bed with cracks "all over" the ground indicating that no amount of water/rainfall/moisture visited the area in a very long time....

that was how my mouth felt.





My tongue was so dry that I couldn't feel the "typical" sensation of running my tongue around my teeth or inner lining of the mouth.

The best way to describe this level of discomfort would be to picture:

  • watching a Netflix "movie marathon" for 6-8 hours

eating "savory" salted snacks such as potato chips, pretzels, popcorn, cheeseburgers and pizza... and you "suddenly realize" that you're "out of cold fizzy beverages" to quench your thirst. Water would be a needed luxury right about now!


Let's add to this example... I forgot to mention... this 6-8 hour "movie marathon"... is at your house and you have a room full of invited guests who love "movie marathons".


Your guests also ate from the "savory" salted snacks... then... all at once.. they quickly learned that you... (party host) "dropped-the-ball" and forgot to buy for the party, fizzy beverages to put in the fridge so they are "prime" (nice and chilled for consumption). The party guests suddenly turn into a "crowd" and they are "not so forgiving" as you hoped.


If you are watching a PIRATES OF THE CARRIBBEAN "movie marathon", they would be thinking about becoming a "ship's crew" to form a "mutiny" and have captain (PUT YOUR NAME HERE)… walk the plank! Not pretty at all!


  • filling your mouth with "table salt",

allowing the crystals to disintegrate into liquid form, from your saliva... and then, swallow each and every dissolved mouthful of liquid salt. Your mouth and tongue would crave for water to drink....

a lot of water.




My worst "mouth breathing experiences" occurred when I when I was super tired and I went to bed really late.... 2am late... I had to wake up for 6:30am so I could get myself ready to leave for my job. My wife would be constantly nudging me awake telling me... "Andre, you're snoring again, turn to your left side... I have to get some sleep". I would shift my side-sleeping position from my right side to my left, and then I would drift off to sleep again. Hours later, my alarm would wake me up from my sleep. I would have the worst case of dry mouth plus dry tongue (due to breathing through my mouth while I slept), sore lower jaw (from my mouth being open while I slept). I would have to drink almost 4 full glasses of water just to hydrate my mouth, tongue and inner body. It would be about 5 minutes, after I drank the last glass of water, that I would feel hydrated.


I learned that the medical recommendation is to be a side sleeper and a "nasal-only" breather.

Constant mouth-breathing, while asleep... if left untreated, could lead to "malocclusion"; which is a serious condition.


I experienced waking up suddenly gasping for air so many times and it's such a frightening thing to go through. I wouldn't want this to happen to anyone. I'm certain that, during these episodes, I was in a deep sleep; and then the next thing I knew... I was instantly awake (coughing and gasping for air) with NO oxygen in my lungs to breathe... to get precious air into my system.

1. Coughing


Each episode lasted a few minutes. as indicated by my wife. To honor my wife's viewpoint, I should also mention that my wife would also wake up suddenly, each time, due to my violent episodes of coughing while trying to get air into my lungs. I would disrupt my wife's REM sleep cycle which would cause her to become very exhausted during the next day. This is not fair to my wife.


After 7-10 minutes of deep breathing, coughing, drinking water and trying calm myself down so I can try to get back to sleep; I was so exhausted, and I needed to get back to sleep. My mind was still racing thinking... what caused me to wake up gasping for air. I had to figure this out.


In the morning, I would wake up exhausted; and it would take everything just to get out of bed and get ready to start my day.


Throughout the day, I couldn't concentrate on daily activities at work, and I would be so tired. Sometimes, I would doze off


stopped at a red light or pull over on a random residential street to take a "brief nap".

This wasn't good.


I had to figure this out!


Fast forward to today... through my personal hardships AND lack of finding an adequate solution to provide relief from the experience listed above... and additional sleep problems/disorders, I was blessed to create, make prototypes, test AND manufacture the LacunaSOLO Pillow; which is patent-pending. Now, we look forward to providing our innovations to people who are also suffering from and experiencing the same symptoms; so you too can:
